Spillin’ the tea about FeLV!
FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) is a virus that weakens a cat’s immune system. There is a safe vaccine for non-infected cats to help protect them against FeLV, making “mixed households” possible.
Hermitage is a FeLV+ sanctuary and advocate. We are one of 22 shelters in the country who rescues cats infected with FeLV. Due to stigma, many FeLV+ cats are unnecessarily euthanized. There is no cure for FeLV and it ultimately fatal. BUT with regular vet visits and proper care, FeLV+ cats can live quality lives. Adopting a FeLV+ cat is like adopting a senior, their time with you may be shorter and they may develop a sudden illness, but their love is as strong and faithful as any furry companion.
KITTENS AND FELV! – kittens can contract FeLV from their mothers but can clear the virus from their system up to the age of 6 months. Therefore we don’t routinely test or vaccinate for kittens under 6 months.
